Country of choice: Italy
In this project, I learned a lot about Italy such as the common standards of living, the culture, the historic events, and their contributions to the global society. I hadn’t considered what it was like to live in Italy around the time we were focusing on. I learned that around 1800, Italy’s economy had swollen to excessive proportions. This began their industrial revolution which was inspired by Great Britain’s. The people of Italy began to think outside of the box and contribute to science and technology as well as their own standards of high class living. They began inventing supercars and luxury sports cars and many very expensive luxury machines. As well as nice cars, luxuries such as the espresso machine was also one of their achievements. The futurists of Italy invented many amazing and helpful things such as the Radio Telegraph and other means of communication. I enjoyed researching all of this because I used to only consider their culture and not their technology.
The item we chose to recreate for exhibition was the Radio Telegraph. We chose to display this because it would represent the technologically advanced leaps that Italy made in the 1800s. The radio telegraph is also known to be the “Grandfather of the internet,” because it was the first form of wireless communication which later evolved into phones and radios. I am pleased with the way our final product came out. Overall, it was visually exceptional and well made. On top of that, it was functional. When the button on the central bar was pressed down, a light would turn on to represent a dot or dash of morse code. We also hid all the wiring with a few clever ideas such as covering it with a plague.
For the prototype, we constructed a rudimentary non-functioning telegraph key out of cardboard and made obvious the basic elements we would require and add into the final version. Each group member did a different element of the key. I worked on cutting out the pieces and gluing together most of them. I constructed the movable part of the central arm. I feel like our process of doing small pieces individually then putting them together later as a group was very efficient and worked well. It translated well into our final product
I would be interested in learning about Japan because of their unique and amazing culture that I know of. When I think of Japan, I usually think of the technology and tradition which shows two separate worlds that are conjoined by the country. I think it is fascinating and I would love to learn more about how they got to the state they are in today. It would interest me to examine their global contributions to science and technology as well as how they maintain a unique and diverse culture.
I feel pride when I reflect on how exhibition went for me. The overall process leading up to exhibition was very efficient and my group and I got a lot of our work done very quickly which left us a lot of time to work out any issue and to add on a lot more decorations and consider many other elements that we could improve. I feel proud of the decorations and set up and speeches and everything.
The day of exhibition was very successful and there were a load of people that came up to our booth who were interested in Italy and what we had to say. I feel like we taught a lot of people new things. I was well prepared with things to say and questions to answer when people came up to our booth. I enjoyed the experience and I am pleased with the way everything turned out.
