Career day at HTHNC is one day where each 9th grade student gets to shadow a professional in the workforce that they're looking to eventually get themselves into. It helps to refine future decisions as to what careers we all want later in life. I went to Lincoln Middle School to shadow Mr. Dean from Dean & Associates; a group of environmental consultants. What they do is go around to a multitude of young groups or classes and educate the students on environmental cleanliness. The dress code for the instructors is a business casual and to look relatively nice. They generally have access to all classroom supplies if they're being hired to teach in a classroom setting. Most of the company consists of various instructors who each manage a small set of classes or groups that they are set to educate about the environment.
In high school so far, many of the projects we've had to do have required us to communicate with complete strangers and hold conversation. This was definitely a helpful skill when asking to shadow and to help out students on the day of shadowing in my case. Mr. Dean, the man whom I shadowed, is the Director of Dean & Associates and head of the SWPPP Internship program*. Therefore, he required no credentials to go into his own business. I learned a lot in regards to what the environmental consulting business is truly comprised of. Since my parents run a similar occupation, I thought I would go and see what it is really like. I was not particularly enthralled by the work. A lot of it was pretty close to traditional class room teaching. I see now that it is not a job I'd be shooting for in the future. It doesn't seem too creative or interesting, however, it does seem to be a very good job to the overall environment. Education is definitely necessary especially about the future of humanity. Next year, I will prioritize career day prep and seek to shadow people of higher status and of other jobs I'd be interested in. This year, I didn't give myself enough time to consider a lot of options of shadow opportunities. I want to be sure to give myself enough prep.
