proJect descriptionFor this project, we created prints which are carved blocks that are essentially large stamps. Our design represents a significant time in our life or a variation of that concept. After we created our prints, we used a few printmaking techniques to add color. We creatively utilized these colors techniques by using paints and colored paper to enhance our art pieces.

PROCESSFirst, we drew or transferred our designs onto soft blocks. Next, we carved out the lines of the positive or negative space of the block, depending on how you want your composition to come out. Then we rolled ink onto our carved blocks then printed them on papers. Finally, we added color to our final art pieces to best achieve the meaning and purpose of the piece.

Jig Saw
By Diego A. Diaz Subject Matter: The art piece itself is a simple criss-cross of thick and thin lines and unique dotted patterns to create an abstract collage of triangular geometric shapes. It was inspired by an independent art piece I drew and has no central subject or focus. It is a mere conglomeration of different inconsistent shapes. The ink is only black, but it is atop a background of colorful geometrically cut pieces of paper. Symbolism: The mess of shapes represent a nonlinear visual representation of angst and apprehension for the bold impending futures that we all hold. Limited knowledge of the paths of which we traverse, could be a cause for anxieties and concern. The juxtaposition of simple shapes along with complex patterns and imagery creates a duality between calm and chaotic, between easy and hard, and so forth. This represents the unpredictable quality of life and the futures we careen towards. Design and Techniques: Every student was given a soft block and some tools to carve it with. First, we drew our initial designs onto the block. Next, we began to carve out the lines we drew or the inverse. It is a very simple process on paper, but genuine, proper execution, was much easier said than done. It was a tedious task to remove the desired amount of soft block at a time with the rather bulky tools. In the end, after a lot of focused work, they all came out relatively good looking. Spanish Personification: Estoy confundido. Hay complejidades en la vida que no podemos describir. Bajo toda la locura del mundo, hay simplicidad en las líneas gruesas y formas básicas. Tu vida y tu futuro es lo que haces. |
